Diabetes is a serious life-long health condition that occurs when the amount of glucose (sugar) in the blood is too high because the body can’t use it properly, if left untreated, high blood glucose levels can cause serious health complications.

There are two main types of diabetes: Type 1 and Type 2. They’re different conditions caused by different things, but they are both serious and need to be treated and managed properly.

OUTLINE OF THE ROLE:        

To provide virtual assistance and support to the specialist nursing team within NHS Borders General Hospital. Nursing staff require a more virtual existence – they require assistance in maintaining a diabetes specific website/Instagram and twitter account to allow them to engage with the remote and rural community of the Scottish Borders.

Eventbrite is a self directed appointment system that would allow us to book group education with reduced support from administration allowing patients to book appropriate and timely appointments enhancing patient engagement and satisfaction.

MAIN DUTIES:

  • To provide virtual assistance and support to the specialist nursing team
  • To promote diabetes to the wider community via website
  • To promote / maintain diabetic website and social media relating to diabetes
  • To support the registration of group education
  • Forwarding up to date virtual diabetes information to members of public
  • Feeding back any issues or concerns to the Diabetes Team

SKILLS & QUALITIES REQUIRED:

  • Good communication skills
  • IT literate and able to use social media
  • Well organised and reliable
  • Have a friendly, positive outlook
  • Be able to work independently but also as part of a team
  • Ability to maintain patient confidentiality at all times
  • Accurate

TRAINING

  •         Mandatory Volunteer Training
  • Training with Diabetic team
  • Induction Training

SUPPORT:      

Volunteers will receive induction training, expenses and ongoing support from Jill little in the Diabetes Team.
