VE Celebration Fund launched by Scottish Borders Council

sbc logoScottish Borders Council has launched a VE Celebration Fund to enable non-profit making community or voluntary groups, community council, schools and churches to apply for funding to undertake special celebratory events or projects, for the benefit of their local and wider communities, to mark the 75th anniversary of VE Day.

veday-75-logoVictory in Europe Day, generally known as VE Day in Great Britain, is a day celebrating the formal acceptance by the Allies of World War II of Nazi Germany's unconditional surrender of its armed forces on 8 May 1945.

Applicants must be able to demonstrate that they will use the fund to provide more opportunities for communities to come together to:
• celebrate VE Day by holding, for example, events, concerts, open days, street parties etc., or
• create a lasting legacy of VE Day by, for example, making improvements to public spaces, play parks or community gardens.

The fund is open to all groups, constituted and non-constituted. However, a constituted group must have agreed to hold the money for a non-constituted group, grants will not be paid to individuals. For example, a group of residents applies for a grant to hold a party for everyone in their street; as the residents aren't a formally recognised group the local community council may agree that the grant can be paid into the community council bank account.

Although many events will take place over the course of the weekend 8 – 10 May it is expected that there will be others that cover a longer period, for example a community exhibition or a collection and publication of memories.

The fund will open to applications on 24 February and close on 31 May 2020. Applications will be processed quickly and efficiently on a fast track basis.

We will keep you up to date with the number of applications received and the type of projects that people are planning.

Further information, guidance and application forms will be available on the Council's website from Monday 24 February or by contacting the Communities & Partnerships Team at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it or on 0300 100 1800.
